Deceased WI - Kelsey Musgrove missing at Potato River Falls; Mar 2022

Trippy

Right On!
This is so unfortunate. KM evidently had an accident right near where she made her last phone call at Potato River Falls, but she wasn't searched for for 4 days, and wasn't found until perhaps a week later. Evidently, her remains were easy to overlook, since, although she was right where she was last reported to be, she had a fall on a clay slope and was partly buried by debris. The theory is she was wanting to get a selfie of herself and the falls, and wandered onto a mud cliff that collapsed under her. The falls do seem to be quite spectacular. It was not unusual for her to take selfies while hiking.

But how horrible.

You never think of a river bank collapsing under you.... I suppose if there's been heavy runoff, the river may have carved into the bank or saturated the soil. Oh, here, I see the sheriff said as much:

The Iron County Sheriff's Office also issued a warning about solo hikes after the accident.

"Clay banks are always unstable and can be undermined in areas not visible from above. When hiking, please stay on marked trails and observation areas ..."

I guess she went off trail? It sounds like it from the Sheriff’s warning.

This is awful for me to imagine. I can see myself falling off a cliff. Just not getting buried in a collapsed clay bank.
